About Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (TMV)
History Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth is a result of the visionary and tireless efforts of Mahatma Gandhi during the Indian National Congress Session at Nagpur in 1920/21 to have a university established. It was established as an educational monument in the memory of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the 'Author of Indian Unrest' and a champion of National Education.
Right from the inception, the Vidyapeeth took a long leap in the field of education by adopting tender education programme which could be moulded along its affiliated colleges and institutes. It sought affiliation with other such institutions to impart education in Arts, Science, Commerce and Ayurveda at Graduate and Post-graduate levels. Special place was given to Sanskrit which was seen as the language for the national culture. Teaching in Marathi was also promoted, something that was considered revolutionary within the education system at the time.
Valuing the cause of national education, teachers and students of the Vidyapeeth participated in Non-Cooperation Movement (1930& 32) and Quit India Movement (1942). To this end, it was closed down for a while, but due to the activity of national-hearted organisations and people, it could survive and preserve its identity.
In course of time Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth grew into a national institution that was vigorous in spreading national education and patriotic ideas among the young generation during pre-independence period. Right from the time of its inception, it was backed with a tough administrative base emphasizing the principal organs such as Board of Management, Academic Council, Planning and Monitoring Board, Finance Committee in addition to the office bearers like Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor & Registrar. The inaugural Chancellor was Shri Shankaracharya Vidyashankar Bharati (Kurtakoti). Subsequently illustrious persons have held this post including Sanskrit scholars Shri C. V. Vaidya and Maha Mahaopadhyay Datto Vaman Potdar as well as leaders like Shri B.G. Kher, Dr. M.S. Aney, Shri Y.B. Chavan, Shri S.B Chavan, Shri Shivraj Patil & last but not the least Honorable Sharadraoji Pawar (Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1978 to 1981).
Today, TMV is also recognized for its contribution to professional education, making it a preferred choice among students exploring MBA colleges in Pune.
