Our program is designed to train and educate fire service professionals in response to high-pressure emergencies; therefore, the 4-year undergraduate course also aids students from various backgrounds to become effective emergency responders. With hands-on experience, students are trained to take on high-stress cases commonly seen in emergencies, including car crashes, injurious falls, cardiac arrests, strokes and various acute medical problems. While the program pulls students from sitting in a classroom and having them spend unprecedented time in the hospital setting, it gives students specialised training across emergency and trauma units, develops technical skills, and requires on-the-spot decision making to perform their job. There, they learn from real-life simulations, patient engagements, and tutelage from senior health practitioners. Upon graduation, students are primed and ready to assume the title of emergency medical technologist in a wide array of settings, including hospitals, ambulances and trauma centres; at that moment when seconds count.
