About Deogiri College, Aurangabad
Deogiri College, Aurangabad, came into existence in 1960 at a crucial turning point in the history of Marathwada. For centuries, the region had suffered under the Nizam’s rule, remaining socially and educationally backwards until its liberation in 1948. When Marathwada was merged into Maharashtra in 1956, a new wave of hope swept across the land, and the need for education became the central force for progress. To answer this call, the Marathwada Shikshan Prasarak Mandal was founded in 1958, led by visionaries like Mr. V. R. Sawant and Mr. Vinayakrao Patil, who, with the support of committed social reformers, dedicated themselves to dispelling ignorance through the power of learning. Their efforts gave birth to Deogiri College, an institution that was not just a place of study but a symbol of awakening for the people of Marathwada. The college took as its guiding motto “Duritanche timir jawo”—“Let the darkness of ignorance be driven away”—and from the very beginning, it carried forward a mission larger than education alone. It became a platform for identity, dignity, and empowerment, especially for those who had been marginalised and denied opportunities. Rooted in the proud legacy of the Yadav dynasty at Deogiri Fort and inspired by the vision of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to bring justice and upliftment to the ordinary people, Deogiri College has, since its inception, worked tirelessly for the economically and socially disadvantaged, lighting the path of progress for generations of students and serving as a pillar of transformation for the entire region.
