Highlights A Master of Science (M.Sc.) is a postgraduate academic degree that is typically awarded in the sciences or related fields upon the successful completion of a specific program of study. This degree is designed to provide individuals with advanced knowledge, specialized skills, and a deeper understanding of a particular subject area. Completion of an M.Sc. degree opens up various career opportunities. Graduates may pursue careers in academia, research institutions, industry, or government agencies. The advanced knowledge and research experience gained during the program enhance their qualifications for specialized roles.
Established in 1950 by the Government of India, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP) stands as an autonomous institute dedicated to engineering and technology education. Recognized as the first among the seven IITs and bestowed with the status of an Institute of National Importance, IIT Kharagpur has consistently ranked among the premier engineering institutions in India. Various engineering education surveys, including those conducted by India Today and Outlook, have consistently acknowledged its excellence.
IIT Kharagpur emerged with a specific mission to train scientists and engineers following India's independence in 1947. Its inaugural classes took place in the historic setting of the abandoned Hijli Detention Camp, a site once used by the British to incarcerate activists of the Indian independence movement. Notably, in 1952, the foundation stone for a new campus was laid, marked by a ceremony attended by the then Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Jawaharlal Nehru.
On September 15, 1956, the Indian Parliament passed the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) Act, officially designating it as an Institute of National Importance. The symbolism of IIT Kharagpur's mission is aptly represented by the initial use of the Hijli Detention Camp building: education is envisioned as the catalyst propelling India from a history of oppression to the dawn of a new, enlightened nation.
