About Maharashtra Education Society (MES)
The Maharashtra Education Society (MES) has a truly storied history, beginning in 1860 when it was founded by visionary figures Vaman Prabhakar Bhave, Laxman Narhar Indapurkar, and the legendary freedom fighter Vasudev Balvant Phadke. Originally known as the Poona Native Institutions, the society was born from a deep-seated desire to instill nationalistic values and strong character in the youth of India. Phadke himself served as the first secretary and treasurer, setting a standard for leadership that has guided the organization for over 150 years. What began as a humble initiative has blossomed into a massive educational landmark in Pune, officially registered under both the Societies Registration Act and the Bombay Public Trusts Act by the mid-20th century.
Today, MES is a cornerstone of the educational landscape, offering a complete learning journey from kindergarten all the way to postgraduate research. Its impact is best seen through its "gems"—the countless graduates who have gone on to serve both Maharashtra and the nation with distinction. A key part of this legacy is Abasaheb Garware College, established in 1945. Originally known as the M.E.S. College of Arts and Science, it stands as the society's premier institution for these disciplines.
