The University of Mumbai (previously recognized as the University of Bombay) is one of India's earliest and top Universities. It was founded in 1857 as a result of "Wood's Education Dispatch", and is one of the first three Universities in India. As a result of the change of name of the city, from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the University was changed from "University of Bombay" to the "University of Mumbai", vide notification issued by the Government of Maharashtra and published in the Government Gazette dated 4th September, 1996. The University received 5 star status in 2001 and 'A++' grade status in April 2017 from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
