About us
Soon after independence, Professor V.K.R.V. Rao, with the support of Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, envisioned creating an institution in India that would stand alongside the best in the world. Inspired by the London School of Economics, the Delhi School of Economics (DSE) was conceived in 1948 as a centre for advanced learning and research in the social sciences. When Professor Rao later became Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, he expanded this vision by establishing new departments in Sociology, Geography, Business Management, and Commerce.
From the beginning, DSE has focused on excellence in both teaching and research, a tradition strengthened by the contributions of great scholars like Prof. Amartya Sen, Prof. Jagdish Bhagwati, Prof. K.N. Raj, Prof. Sukhamoy Chakraborty, Prof. B.N. Ganguly, Prof. P.K. Ghosh, Prof. L.C. Gupta, and Dr. Manmohan Singh. Their work not only enhanced the school’s reputation but also shaped India’s social and economic progress.
The Department of Commerce, established in 1967, has become a pioneer in shaping commerce education in the country. Over the years, it has built a strong reputation for innovation, academic rigour, and leadership in curriculum design, teaching, and research. Alongside its well-known M.Com., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programs, the department introduced professional postgraduate courses to meet the needs of a changing market. In 1995, it launched two specialised programs—Master of International Business (MIB) and Master of Human Resource and Organisational Development (MHROD). Within a short span, both programs gained national recognition, offering students deep academic knowledge combined with practical exposure to prepare them for leadership roles in international business and human resource management.
