About Madras Christian College
Madras Christian College (MCC) has a long history that stretches back over a century and a half to 1837, when a small school was started in the black town of Madras by the Rev. John Anderson. What began as a modest venture, developed through the dynamism of scholars like Rev. then later, thanks to William Miller who named the college in his honor in 1877, and established the academic standards still in evidence today.
MCC, which shifted from George Town in 1937 to the sprawling 400-acre Tamabaram campus where generations of students have lovingly made it their home. Visionary leaders over the years have contributed to the development of MCC, be that Dr. Chandran Devanesen who was the first Indian principal who brought new focus and expansion to the campus.
MCC has historically been decades ahead of the curve. In 1978, it was elevated to the status of one of the first autonomous colleges, which enables it to frame its own courses of study and adopt innovative tests and evaluation procedures. The college brought out several new diploma courses, vocational degrees and self-financed courses to keep abreast with the trend of the world. Currently, the college provides various courses in arts, science, commerce, and research through its 34 departments.
At MCC, it’s more than academic. It’s about growth and discovery and connection. With colorful student residences, vast sports fields, cultural fests and a student mix other than the ordinary, MCC's environment is an enriching and transformative experience.
The centenary and other landmark milestones were always well observed – 100 years relocating to Tambaram, national leadership visits from Dr. S. Radha Krishnan to Rajiv Gandhi, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam etc. MCC’s 175th year in 2012 was yet another moment of pride when national dignitaries attended and the latest facilities such as solar power plants and academic blocks were inaugurated.
