About the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai
The Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai, has a rich history dating back to 1st October 1933, when the University of Bombay established it through an endowment from Sir Cowasji Jehangir. The visionaries behind the institute included Sir Vaman Naoroji, who recognised the need to elevate chemical education standards in India. In his honour, the college has a personal block and a statue dedicated to him. Initially, the training and research under this endowment were conducted in a section of the then Royal Institute of Science in India, before being relocated to Matunga with the establishment of the University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT).
Over the years, UDCT grew into a larger, internationally recognised institute. In 1996, it was granted near-total academic autonomy by the Government of Maharashtra and the University of Mumbai, functioning under the Unitary State Technical University framework. It was later renamed the University Institute of Chemical Technology (UICT) in 2002 and gained full autonomy under the TEQIP program, funded by the World Bank, in 2004. Following recommendations from the UGC and approval from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, ICT achieved the status of a Deemed-to-be-University in 2008.
ICT’s excellence has been widely recognised. In 2012, the State Government of Maharashtra conferred upon it the Elite Status and Centre of Excellence, a distinction rare for any institute in the country. In 2017, the NAAC committee awarded ICT an A++ grade with a CGPA of 3.77/4, reflecting its high academic and research standards. Today, ICT stands as one of the top engineering institutes in India, consistently ranked among the best in chemical technology, pharmacy, and engineering. It has been placed 19th among top colleges in India, 4th among pharmacy institutes, and ranked 115th in the QS BRICS 2019 ranking.
The institute’s history, autonomy, and achievements make it a premier destination for students seeking world-class education and research opportunities in chemical technology and related fields.
