Highlights The Diploma in Engineering or Diploma in Technical Education is a program focused on practical and skills-oriented training. It is a technical course that only covers the essentials when ranked with an undergraduate engineering degree. It aims to provide students with industry or job related engineering knowledge, scientific skills, computing and analysis, mathematical techniques, a sound knowledge of English to communicate in the field and ability to apply problem-solving techniques. After successful completion of diploma in engineering course, students can either continue further engineering studies in undergraduate level or get employment as junior engineers, sub engineers, associate engineers, technicians, technologists, supervisors, superintendents, foremen, machinist, workshop technicians, draftsman, station technicians (energy, thermal, aeronautical), automobile technicians, maintenance and service technicians, equipment mechanics and technicians, CAD/CAM programmer, agricultural overseers, instrument technicians, junior instructors, manufacturing, tool and die designers, electricians...etc.

Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute
Founded in 1887 Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute has been functional for almost 130 years with a transparent and progressive approach in all its academic and administrative activities. History VJTI was established in 1887 and was initially known as ⁃ Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering (Mechanical Engineering and Textile Manufactures), ⁃ Ripon Textile School (Textile Manufactures).
First expansion The first step of the Institute's expansion occurred in 1903 when courses in Electrical Engineering were started. A Department of Technical & Applied Chemistry was established in 1906 and Department of Sanitary Engineering in 1913. Under G. R. No. 1850 dated the 27th June 1913 the institute was made equivalent to Central Technological Institute of Bombay Province. Initially, the Institute's premises were located at Byculla in a structure provided by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit.
After the First World War, the Institute was shifted to its current location in Matunga in 1923. In addition to Sir Petit, the liberal grants were made by the Government and the Bombay Mill Owners’ Association. A new block of northern light roof type construction was erected in 1931 to house the textile machinery and equipment acquired through the courtesy of Sir Ness Wadia.
Degree courses in Bachelor of Textile Technology, Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Electrical Engineering were thrown open in 1946,1947 and 1949 respectively. The Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute has, in fact, played a very important part in the establishment of the IITs during 1955-60. Prof. Kelkar is the founding Director of the IIT in Kanpur and the Rajaram Vithal Patil and IIT Bombay planning officer was Electrical Engineering faculty in the VJTI. Prof SenGupto, founding director of IIT Madras was Principal of VJTI.
The Institute has been connected to the University of Bombay and was among the fourteen institutes selected by the Central Government for exchange with grant-in-aid from Govt. of India. Before year 1960 the only institute of higher learning in aeronautical engineering for the whole country was the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute (VJTI), which was offering the then diploma in Aeronautical Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance under University of Bombay with de facto autonomy.
