About us
The Christian Medical College is an unaided, non-captitation, Christian minority educational institution admitting students on merit on an all-India basis. The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore was established and is maintained by the Christian Medical College Vellore Association, a registered society, formed by over 50 different Indian Christian churches and Christian organizations which run over 225 hospitals, health centres and dispensaries throughout the length and breadth of this country, many of which are situated in remote rural areas. The purpose of the Christian Medical College, therefore, is to train dedicated persons to manage, run and provide health care in the spirit of Christ through the mission hospitals. The motto of the institution is: “Not To Be Ministered Unto, But To Minister” In 2018, the Christian Medical College Vellore proudly celebrated the completion of a hundred years of Medical Education, which began in 1918, bringing to fruition the dream of our visionary founder, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder.
Course Outcomes
With an MBBS, graduates will be able to work anywhere in the world as a fully qualified doctor with the knowledge and skills to assess different types of disease and also to be able to apply appropriate treatments and management. Over the course of the program, students learn topics such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and surgery, as well as undergoing on-the-job experience in hospitals and clinics. By the time they graduate, they should be trained to deliver care, address emergencies, undertake minor surgeries and steer patients toward healthier lives. Their degree also gives way for higher studies which include MD and MS for those wishing to specialize further.
Approaches
The teaching pattern at MBBS degree is a mix of theoretical and practical knowledge. Students focus on classroom learning and lab work in the first few years and transition to clinical rotations in later years, in which they work directly with patients under supervision. This allows them to relate what they learn in textbooks to real life. Internships and hospital placements offer actual experience of diagnosis and treatment of patients, handling serious cases and working within a team in a healthcare environment. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, the curriculum focuses on empathy, ethics and communication, producing graduates who are not only proficient doctors, but also responsible ones who care for people as well as populations.
