About Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (TMV)
Vidyapeeth had prepared a comprehensive national education programme and successfully implemented it at that time in all colleges / institutions under its control. It coordinated with similar institutions, both at the under graduate and post graduate levels and offered education in the faculties of Arts, Science Commerce and Ayurveda. Much attention was paid to Sanskrit – the language of national culture. The policy of the Vidyapeeth to offer education in Marathi was seen as a step forward 'revolution' in school system.
Being a Vidyapeeth of Bharatiya type the teachers and pupils had also joined hands to engage themselves in non - cooperation movement in 1930 and 1932 and also in 'Quit India' movement in 1942. Accordingly; vidyapeeth activities were stopped notification published. But for the national- minded institutions and individuals, Vidyapeeth would not have survived this period of trial to preserve its distinct identity.
Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth has acquired a New identity, the only kind in India, during the pre-independence period and that is referred to as National Essence in education through which such an academic system can be evolved so as to infuse patriotisms among the youths.Today, it is recognized for its high-quality postgraduate education, including its esteemed MSc colleges in Pune. The Vidyapeeth was having the state of art infrastructure at its headquarters right from beginning with all essential units, such as Board of Management, Academic Council, Planning and Monitoring Board, Faculties, Finance Committee etc. along with the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar as executive heads to run management. Key persons served prestigiously for management are Sri K.B. Pal (Ex. Chief Secretary, Karnataka) and Smt. Shri. Shankaracharya Vidyashankar Bharati (Kurtakoti), was the founding Chancellor of Vidyapeeth. This seat had been won by other intellectual heavyweights and people with national stature, such as great Sanskrit scholar Bharatacharya Shri C V Vaidya,, the first premier of Bombay Presidency Shri B.G. Kher, Dr M.S. alias Lokanayak Bapusaheb Aney, great Sanskrit scholar & a historian Maha Mahaopdhyay Datto Vaman Potdar, and thereafter Honourable Shri Y B Chavan; Shri S.B. Chavan former Union Home Ministers, Shri Shivraj Patil - all past Union Home Ministers & from amongst present Central Minister for Power- Shri Sushilkumar Shinde.
Various eminent people like Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Zakir Husain, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar and recently even Dr.Anil Kakodkar have visited the Vidyapeeth campus and were impressed by its distinctiveness, culture and research contributions etc. Shri. Sharad Pawar, Shri. Pranab Mukherji in fact are few other such personalities who has had an opportunity to visit the Vidyapeeth Campus.
The Vidyapeeth added in the post – Independent India, the faculty of Social Sciences and began to offer M.A. as well as Research facilities threvn in. The teaching, and research by the Departments of Sanskrit, Ayurveda and Social Sciences is highly appreciated. At national level, non-formal education was born in 1985.
