The M.S. by Research program at IIT Bombay is offered through select departments and centres such as Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), the Centre for Machine Intelligence and Data Science (CMInDS), and the Koita Centre for Digital Health (KCDH).
To be eligible, candidates must hold a B.E., B.Tech., or equivalent engineering degree, or an M.Sc. or equivalent in a science discipline. A valid GATE score in a relevant subject is mandatory for most applicants, and departments specify their own minimum academic performance requirements.
Admissions are offered under various categories, including Teaching Assistantship (TA) and Research Assistantship through Project (RAP), both of which provide financial support to full-time students. Selection typically involves GATE-based shortlisting followed by departmental written tests and interviews. Candidates are required to apply through the institute’s admission portal and accept offers via the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP).
The M.S. by Research program duration ranges from about one and a half years to a maximum of three years, depending on research progress. Employed applicants may also be required to provide a No Objection Certificate from their employer at the time of admission.
In departments like Computer Science, students are allowed to participate in placement activities starting from their third year, ensuring ample exposure to both research-driven and industry-oriented roles.
